Marvel’s new Punisher series has brought the heat from the jump, but this week’s issue is a cut above the other two. It’s always a risk to mess with a character’s past, especially when it’s a character like Frank Castle. But, Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz and Paul Azaceta took that risk and executed.

Punisher readers have always been led to believe Castle’s origin as the vigilante began the day his family died. Turns out, that’s not the case — it all started before he was even in the military. And that seed had been planted previously by this creative team, but it wasn’t clear how they’d expand on Punisher’s past as it relates to The Hand.

Well, Aaron, Saiz and Azaceta made good on that tease and in an explosive way. Juxtaposing Saiz and Azaceta’s art styles has a huge impact on the effectiveness of the story. The art for the past is much more raw, while the art for the present is very refined. With Dave Stewart playing to both Saiz and Azaceta’s approaches, the art reflects how Castle’s vigilante career started and where it is now.

A must-read series for Frank Castle fans and great place to jump in for those new to reading Punisher comics.

Honorable Mention: Step By Bloody Step #4 – Rogue Sun #4 – Something is Killing the Children #23 – Hulk #7
