We may argue all we wish about the quality of the last couple of seasons, but ‘Game of Thrones’ left an indelible impact on American media, making further iterations of the franchise were inevitable. Thus, the first series ‘House of the Dragon’ may just have a release year.
HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys gave a statement in an interview with Deadline during TCA:
“”My guess is sometime in 2022,” he said about when the series will debut, stressing that it is too early to be more specific than that.”
With the new series aiming for a premiere in 2022, it looks like HBO is taking their time in crafting the next installment in the franchise.
‘House of the Dragon’ will focus on the Targaryen family, 300 years before Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen ascended to power. It will be based off of the short story ‘Fire & Blood’ that was written by George R.R. Martin, who is also co-creator and co-writer of ‘House of the Dragon.’
Ryan Condal, the co-writer of ‘Rampage’ as well as the creator and showrunner of ‘Colony,’ will serve as co-creator, co-writer, and co-showrunner with Miguel Sapochnik, who directed six episodes of the flagship series. The season will consist of ten episodes.
Sapochnick, who won an Emmy for helming the ‘Game of Thrones’ episode “Battle of the Bastards,” will also direct the pilot, as well as additional episodes in the season. The other five episodes he has directed are ‘The Gift,’ ‘Hardhome,’ ‘The Winds of Winter,’ ‘The Long Night,’ and ‘The Bells.’
There is no casting news yet, as the series is still being written.
This announcement follows the scrapping of another prequel series from Jane Goldman, which was supposed to be set 8,000 years prior to ‘Game of Thrones’ proper, and would have starred Naomi Watts.
The other three remaining ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs that were in the works at HBO are on hold, for now. These spin-offs were from writers Max Borenstein (‘Godzilla,’ ‘The Terror’), Brian Helgeland (‘L.A. Confidential,’ ‘Legend’), and Carly Wray (‘Westworld,’ ‘Watchmen’).
No other information about ‘House of the Dragon’ was provided at this time, though we will provide more info as it is revealed.
