Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #1 Cover Art

When Gwen Stacy was bitten by a radioactive spider, she gained arachnid-like super abilities. We are all familiar with that particular part of the tale. In Spider Gwen: Gwenverse #1, we get a different story to start off this new five-issue miniseries. There are many possibilities once you step into the multiverse. If you’ve ever thought that there’s not enough Gwens in your life, this is the series for you. This teenage hero must come face to face and fight her worse fear to save her timeline and the entire multiverse – herselves.

Ghost-Spider tumbles into our lives once again with her high-tech suit of armor

Gwen Stacy is still reeling from the events of Edge of Spiderverse: Spider-Gwen and the changed circumstances of her crimefighting career as Spider-Woman. Her dad doesn’t understand and her friends are more frenemies. Such can be the life of a 16-year-old girl. But this girl has a secret or had. She’s affectionately known as Ghost-Spider and is a regular hero around her low super existence. The secret is out in her world, adding to the complications.

Final Thoughts

Tim Seeley (Heroes Reborn: Marvel Double Action) is able to capture Gwen’s teenage angst beautifully without making her seem whiny. Fans can’t wait to see her take the Super Soldier serum instead of Captain America and don a cape. Her holding the enchanted hammer Mjolnir brings another dimension to her character with the ego of a god.

Jodi Nishijima and Federico Blee worked in harmony to bring this story to life. The style of art is cute but powerful leaving the reader pouring through the story instead of being distracting. With Spider-Gwen and Thor-Gwen working together in issue #2, there is no limit to where the story can take us.
