World of Warcraft is a world-famous game that has earned the status of one of the most iconic MMORPG games in history over its 20-year existence. Over all the years of its existence, a lot of events have happened in the world of WoW; some of them became key and significantly influenced the further development of the game. So, we invite you to dive into a retrospective from Classic to the Dragonflight expansion to relive those unforgettable moments of our favorite game. Back to the Past: Classic WoW’s Sunwell and Isle of Quel’Danas

The Sunwell is a big part of the World of Warcraft story because it’s where the Bood Elves get fuel. Arthas Menethil’s attack with his army of the dead and the current battle in this patch, between the demons of Kil’jaeden, are two recent examples from history. This update, also known as Patch 2.4.0, added the Isle of Quel Danas and the last set of changes, fixes, and tweaks before Northrend opened. As a result, the number of people who subscribed to World of Warcraft went crazy high. This patch added two new instances and a whole new place to explore, so it’s pretty much the same as a mini-expansion — it just didn’t add a new race or class.

Blazing Saga: Adventures in The Burning Crusade

The Burning Crusade was the first full update for World of Warcraft. It added the Dark Portal and the first trip to Outland. The latter was a broken planet where orcs lived before they came to Azeroth through the Dark Portal. The game also added a new race to each side: the Horde got Blood Elves and the Alliance got Draenei. At first, Doomguards like Highlord Kruul attacked big towns all over the game, which scared low-level players. Cities from Darnassus to Stormwind were full of skeletons as the best groups rushed to fight off the demons before going to Outland. Mounts that could fly were added in Burning Crusade, and Shattrath became the game’s first neutral city.

Frozen Legacy: The Unforgiving Wrath of the Lich King

The Wrath of the Lich King expansion was launched on November 13, 2008, with players traveling to Northrend to defeat the Lich King. It is worth noting that the first victory over the Lich King was achieved on the very first day that the last wing of Icecrown Citadel was opened to players, namely on February 4, 2010, by the Paragon guild. It was during this time that WoW subscriber numbers peaked, reaching around 12 million players in October 2010. Then the average online presence began to decline, and it reached the lower threshold of 5.6 active subscriptions until May 2015.

Wrath of the Lich King revolutionized the way raiding was presented, clearly separating casual and hardcore styles. The developers tried out many new ideas. Some of them were received well, while others were met with hostility. One way or another, we can confidently say that all the experience that Blizzard accumulated while working on WoTLK dungeons was beneficial for future Cataclysm raids and other additions.

Shattered Realms: The Cataclysm’s Impact on WoW

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the third expansion for the popular MMORPG, was released on December 7, 2010. This expansion brought significant changes to the game, including a complete overhaul of the original zones in Azeroth. Players witnessed the devastating return of Deathwing, the corrupted Dragon Aspect, whose cataclysmic emergence reshaped the world. Cataclysm introduced two new playable races, Goblins for the Horde and Worgens for the Alliance, along with an increased level cap to 85.

The expansion also revamped the talent system, introduced new dungeons and raids, allowed players to fly in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, and added the Transmogrification feature. This feature allowed players to customize the appearance of their weapons and armor by copying the look of one item onto another. With these changes, Cataclysm aimed to refresh gameplay, offer new challenges, and provide an engaging experience for World of Warcraft players.

The Dragonflight Expansion: Soaring Through Azeroth’s Skies

The Dragonflight Expansion is all about the stories of the Dragonflights, as the name suggests. It’s a fun story that goes back to the beginning of Azeroth’s past. The Dragon Isles, a place that has been in the story for a while, is a new area that players can explore. A new race called the Dracthyr has been added. As part of the theme, there is a mount that can be changed to look like a dragon, and the makers have added some fun features like the ability to dive and roll while flying.

Conclusion

As you have understood, World of Warcraft has undergone a transformative phase spanning over two decades, with some major expansions from Classic to the highly anticipated Dragonflight Expansion. These ongoing chapters continue to contribute to the popularity of WoW attracting more and more people to the game.
