The list of Hollywood adaptations of anime grows even larger, as Legendary enlists Brian K. Vaughan to write the screenplay for ‘Gundam.’
Vaughan is the creator of several comic books, including ‘Y: The Last Man,’ ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Runaways.’ He was a writer and developer of the ABC series adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Under the Dome,’ and was a writer on ‘Lost,’ also ABC.
This will be the first live-action film based on the popular mecha anime and science fiction media franchise. This is perfect timing too, cause next month is the 40th anniversary of ‘Mobile Suit Gundam,’ the mecha anime series. And here we are now, with a media and toy franchise that’s been an inspiration to many other franchises, such as ‘Pacific Rim.’
Vaughan has a three-year overall deal with Legendary, so this is the first of many ventures with the studio. This collaboration will lead to adaptations of Vaughan’s creator-owned comics. But that’s not all! Vaughan will develop exclusive, original projects for film and television across traditional and non-traditional platforms.
Further, Vaughan is as an executive producer on ‘Y,’ the FX television adaptation of ‘Y: The Last Man,’ which was adapted by Michael Green and Aida Croal and stars Diane Lane, Timothy Hutton and Amber Tamblyn. He is also an executive consultant on Hulu’s ‘Runaways’ series, which is still waiting for a season three greenlight.
There are no other details regarding a director, plot, cast, crew, or release date for ‘Gundam.’
