Catch up on the fan-favorite Moon Knight in all his many facets and personalities. From Comics to the new Disney+ series, which stars Oscar Isaac, we’ve got you covered.
Origins
Much like Batman, Moon Knight is a vigilante who moonlights as a hero. Unlike Batman, however, Marvel’s caped crusader has multiple personalities he switches between: Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Jake Lockley and Mr. Knight. All of these identities have different motivations and goals, which can sometimes lead to conflict.
His first appearance was in Werewolf by Night #32 in 1975. Doug Moench and Don Perlin created this character. His complicated history includes several retcons and reboots over the years.
Moon Knight is often considered a dark or moody superhero, and his comics have been noted for their psychological depth. Often considered Marvel’s answer to Batman, he is a fan-favorite character and many are excited about his new Disney+ series.
Marc Spector
Mercenary Marc Spector became a skilled fighter and eventually started working for the CIA after being abandoned by his father and raised in poverty. He was then recruited by the terrorist group Hydra, but he eventually left them and started working as a mercenary for hire.
One day, Spector was savagely beaten by a group of criminals. He was saved by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, who gave him supernatural powers. Khonshu also gave Spector a new identity: Moon Knight.
Steven Grant
Steven Grant is the civilian alter ego. He is a successful businessman and has a daughter named Rebecca.
Whereas Spector is unstable and often violent, Steven Grant is calm and level-headed. He provides a necessary balance for the knighted hero and helps to keep him grounded.
The comics revealed Steven Grant as a construct created by Marc Spector’s mind in order to deal with the stress of being Moon Knight.
Jake Lockley
Jake Lockley is one of his many identities. He is a street-wise, cab-driving detective who often helps Moon Knight solve crimes. I think it’s great that he is getting his own series on Disney+. He is a complex and interesting character.
Egyptian Moon God
Khonshu is the god of vengeance and justice, and he often gives Moon Knight guidance and direction. The powerful deity often helps Spector defeat his enemies. He is also linked to the phases of the moon.
